This week via mail, we sent all bill-paying customers in the University Park water system a packet of Illinois Environmental Protection Agency-mandated public education materials. This packet is available on WaterFactsIL.com, and materials have also been dropped off at local multi-family homes. While we have made significant progress under our treatment protocol and a limited number of homes remain impacted, these documents will notify you that, based on tap water samples, lead levels in certain University Park homes still exceed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s threshold for lead in drinking water. Through rigorous monitoring and adjustments to our treatment protocols, we have continually narrowed the number of homes and customers who are impacted. We are working tirelessly, with expert guidance and regulatory oversight, to resolve this matter for the remaining homes. We sent this information to all customers in the University Park water system, even if you are no longer under the advisory. Customers whose homes were previously lifted from the advisory were never impacted and can continue to use water normally. IEPA guidelines suggest that advisory area customers continue to flush cold tap water for two to three minutes and use an NSF-certified filter before consuming tap water. Free resources, water sampling, and in-home technical assistance remain available to advisory area customers. It is important to know that having a home in the advisory area does not automatically mean that your home has elevated lead levels. If you have any questions about these materials, lead plumbing in your home, or steps to reduce potential lead exposure, please call us at 877.987.2782. We remain committed to keeping you informed and will continue to share updates with the community. Thank you for your patience and ongoing collaboration.
